The Golden Rule
Pack for four seasons in one bag. On the same day, you might experience 30°C heat in Dharchula and near-freezing temperatures at Gunji. Layers are everything.
Clothing — The Layer System
Base Layer (against skin)
- 2–3 moisture-wicking thermal tops
- 2 thermal bottoms/leggings
- 4–5 pairs of wool or merino socks
Mid Layer (insulation)
- 1 fleece jacket or pullover
- 1 light down jacket (for Gunji/Adi Kailash)
Outer Layer (protection)
- 1 waterproof rain jacket with hood (non-negotiable)
- 1 windproof outer shell (can be same as rain jacket)
- Rain poncho (for emergencies)
Lower Body
- 2 pairs of trekking/cargo pants
- 1 pair of thermal leggings (for sleeping at Gunji)
- Avoid jeans — they are heavy, don't dry, and restrict movement
Extremities
- Woollen cap/beanie
- Sun hat or cap
- Fleece or wool gloves (waterproof gloves for rain)
- Neck gaiter or muffler
- Sunglasses with UV protection (essential above 3,000 M)
Footwear
- Trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip — the single most important item
- 1 pair of lightweight sandals (for rest houses)
- 2–3 extra pairs of socks (wet feet = blisters = misery)
Medicine Kit
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Diamox (Acetazolamide) | Altitude sickness prevention — consult your doctor before taking |
| Disprin/Paracetamol | Headache relief (common at altitude) |
| ORS packets (5–6) | Dehydration from long travel days |
| Imodium/Loperamide | Stomach upsets from water changes |
| Bandages and antiseptic | Minor cuts and blisters |
| Personal prescription medicines | Carry a 2-week supply |
| Camphor/Vicks | Nasal relief in cold, dry air |
| Moov/pain relief spray | Sore muscles from long drives |

What NOT to Pack
- Jeans — Too heavy, don't dry, restrict movement

- Expectations of 4G internet — Embrace the digital detox
Final Tip from Our Guides
The most common mistake yatris make is under-packing warm clothes. Even in June, Gunji drops to 5°C at night and Adi Kailash can touch 0°C. If you are cold and uncomfortable, the spiritual experience suffers. Pack one more warm layer than you think you need.
